The first thing anyone notices about a ring is how large the diamond looks. But diamonds are sold by weight, and weight and size are related without being the same thing. Understanding the gap between the two, and where the market prices that gap inefficiently, is one of the most useful pieces of knowledge a diamond buyer can carry.
A carat is a unit of weight: exactly one fifth of a gram, divided into 100 points. A five carat diamond weighs one gram, a half carat stone weighs 50 points, and a diamond would have to weigh 141.75 carats to reach a single ounce. Nothing in the definition says anything about millimeters.
That distinction is not pedantry. Weight tells you a great deal about size, and a carat weight chart is a genuinely useful reference. But it does not tell you everything, because two diamonds of identical weight can present noticeably different sizes to the eye. Where the weight sits decides what you see.
A one carat round brilliant is typically about 6.5mm across, but honest examples run from roughly 6.1mm to 6.8mm. The difference is cutting. Some stones are cut deeper, some shallower; some carry a thicker girdle that hides weight where no one will ever see it. Every point of weight buried in depth or girdle is a point you paid for that never reaches the eye.
The reverse also deserves caution. A stone cut shallow spreads wider and faces up larger than its weight suggests, which sounds like a bargain until you understand what shallow cutting does to light. A pavilion cut below the performing angles leaks light out the back of the stone instead of returning it to the eye, so the extra millimeters arrive dimmer. Spread is real value only when the proportions still perform, which is why size and cut quality have to be read together, never separately.
For round brilliants of good proportions, these are the diameters to expect.

Notice what doubling the weight buys: a two carat round is not twice the visual size of a one carat. It is about 60 percent more face up area, because so much of the added weight goes into height. This is the arithmetic behind every disappointed upgrade and every pleasant surprise in diamond shopping, and it is why we counsel clients to think in millimeters as much as in carats.
Each shape carries its weight differently. At two carats, a round brilliant measures about 8.1mm across, an Asscher cut about 7.0mm square, and an oval about 10.5 by 7.0mm. The oval reads dramatically larger than the other two at identical weight. As a rule, rounds, Asschers, and cushions present smaller than their weight, while ovals, pears, and marquises present larger. If finger coverage is the goal, the elongated shapes deliver more of it per carat, and per dollar.
For most things priced by weight, two pounds costs twice one pound. Diamonds refuse that logic. Because large rough is rarer than small rough, the price per carat itself climbs as stones get bigger, so a two carat diamond of identical quality does not cost twice a one carat: it typically costs more than three times as much. Total price compounds twice, once through the weight and again through the per carat rate.
Hold that against the size arithmetic above and the full picture emerges: paying more than triple the price buys roughly 60 percent more visual size. There is nothing wrong with that trade, rarity is real and a two carat stone makes a statement a one carat cannot, but it should be made with open eyes, as a decision about presence rather than a calculation about value.
Ask yourself what size diamond you are shopping for. The answer almost certainly came out as a round number: one carat, a carat and a half, two carats. The entire diamond trade knows this, and the price structure is built around it. Stones from 0.90 to 0.99 carats trade at one per carat rate, and stones from 1.00 carats up trade at a meaningfully higher one. The same cliff repeats at every milestone weight.
Face up size does not jump at those cliffs. It moves gradually, a few hundredths of a millimeter per point of weight. A well cut 0.95 carat diamond can share the exact diameter of a 1.00 carat stone, and once either is set in a ring, the certificate is the only place the difference exists. Buying just under the milestone is not settling; it is declining to pay a premium for a digit.
The milestone weights carry a second, quieter cost. Because 1.00 reads so much better than 0.99 on an invoice, cutters under pressure will preserve weight at the expense of the angles that make a diamond beautiful, hiding points in a thick girdle or a too deep pavilion just to cross the line. An exact 1.00 or 2.00 carat weight is not a defect, but it is a reason to read the proportions more carefully, not less. The stone should earn its weight in light.
The certificate states the weight to the hundredth of a carat. These are the three things it will not say about that number.
Identical weights face up differently. Depth, girdle thickness, and shape decide how much of the weight you actually see, so the measurements line on the certificate matters as much as the carat line. Two stones of equal weight can differ visibly on the hand.
Per carat rates step at the milestone weights while visual size glides. The stones just beneath each milestone are structurally underpriced relative to what the eye receives, which makes them the most rational purchase on the entire weight curve.
The premium for crossing a weight line tempts cutters to keep weight the light does not want. A stone at exactly 1.00 or 2.00 carats deserves a closer read of its proportions, because the weight may have been bought with the angles.

Decide the look you want in millimeters, on a hand, in real light. Then buy the best cut stone that delivers that look, and let the carat weight fall where it falls, which will usually be just beneath a round number that other buyers are overpaying to reach. A 0.95 carat diamond that outperforms a 1.00 in light is not the compromise. It is the better diamond at the better price, wearing a slightly less impressive receipt.
