What Is a VVS2 Diamond Clarity Grade?

Clarity Grade Guide

The VVS2 Clarity Grade

VVS2 inclusions are very difficult to find at 10x magnification, occasionally visible from the crown side under expert eyes. It is the quiet high end: everything VVS1 offers in practice, at a friendlier position on the scale.

Very Very Slightly Included 2

What VVS2 Actually Means

A VVS2 diamond carries inclusions a skilled grader finds only with difficulty at 10x magnification. The technical difference from VVS1 is orientation: VVS2 characteristics may be locatable from the crown, the top of the stone, while VVS1 characteristics generally hide below. Both grades are permanently eye clean, and both read as clean under a casual loupe inspection.

VVS2 is where the top of the scale becomes rational for more buyers. It preserves the near-perfect interior and the strong certificate while shedding a slice of the VVS1 premium, which is why experienced buyers of larger stones so often land exactly here.

The Neighbor Argument

Step Up, Stay, or Step Down

Every clarity decision is really a comparison with the grades on either side. Here is that comparison, made honestly.

Above: VVS1

When to Step Up

Step up if pavilion-side-only inclusions matter to you. Functionally, they will not.

This Grade: VVS2

When to Stay

Choose VVS2 as the value play at the top of the scale: near-perfect paper, permanently eye clean, priced below the grades whose advantages exist only in laboratories.

Below: VS1

When to Step Down

Step down happily for stones under two carats in brilliant cuts. The eye will never file a complaint.

Every stone we recommend is scored by ROSI™, our gemological intelligence, built by our gemologists, with clarity verified by a human eye against the actual stone. Request a ROSI™ Score Report on any diamond, ours or anyone else’s.

Shape Guidance

Where VVS2 Belongs

Like its sibling, VVS2 makes the most sense on step cuts and on brilliant cuts above two carats. It is a particularly common choice for elongated shapes at size, where big open facets and long sight lines reward a very clean interior.

Shape by shape guidance, including face-up size tables and what to demand on each certificate, lives in our shape guides.

An Honest Word
VVS2 is where the smart money at the top of the scale actually lands.

Buyers determined to own a top tier certificate often reach reflexively for VVS1 or IF. VVS2 delivers the same permanent eye cleanliness and nearly the same paper for less, and the difference between them has never once been detected across a dinner table. If the top of the scale is where you want to be, this is its most sensible address, and we will tell you when even this is more than the stone in question needs.

Questions

VVS2 Clarity Questions, Answered

Is a VVS2 diamond eye clean?
Always. VVS2 inclusions are very difficult to find even under 10x magnification. No VVS2 diamond shows anything to the naked eye, at any size or shape.
VVS2 vs VVS1: what is the actual difference?
The side of the stone from which a grader can locate the inclusions. VVS1 characteristics generally hide in the pavilion; VVS2 characteristics may be found from the crown. Both are microscopic distinctions with zero visible consequence, which is why VVS2 is often the smarter buy of the two.
Is VVS2 good enough for an emerald cut?
Yes, comfortably. Step cuts demand clean interiors, and VVS2 delivers one with margin to spare. Many of the finest emerald cut stones we place are VVS2: visibly immaculate through the open facets, without the VVS1 premium.
Should I choose VVS2 or put the money into cut?
Cut, almost always, if the choice is real. A VS1 with superior proportions will outshine a VVS2 with average ones every hour of its life. Secure an excellent cut first; climb the clarity scale only with what remains.
