What Is an SI1 Diamond Clarity Grade?

Clarity Grade Guide

The SI1 Clarity Grade

SI1 is the smart buyer's grade. Its inclusions are noticeable under magnification, and in the right stones, invisible without it. Finding those stones is a craft, and the reward is the best value on the entire clarity scale.

Slightly Included 1

What SI1 Actually Means

An SI1 diamond carries inclusions a skilled grader notices readily at 10x magnification: crystals, feathers, clouds, or wisps of meaningful size. What the grade does not tell you is where they sit, and location is everything. An SI1 whose grade-setting inclusion hides near the girdle, under a future prong, or in the scintillation of a brilliant cut can be perfectly eye clean. One whose dark crystal sits under the table cannot.

That variability is exactly why SI1 is the value grade: the market prices the category, not the individual stone. Buyers who can verify eye cleanliness, or who have a gemologist to do it, routinely secure stones that look identical to VS grades at a meaningful saving, and redirect the difference into carat, color, or cut where it shows.

The Neighbor Argument

Step Up, Stay, or Step Down

Every clarity decision is really a comparison with the grades on either side. Here is that comparison, made honestly.

Above: VS2

When to Step Up

Step up if you want near-certain eye cleanliness without reviewing individual stones.

This Grade: SI1

When to Stay

Choose SI1 with verification, and it is the best value in diamonds. The grade cannot find the good ones for you. We can, and we do it every day.

Below: SI2

When to Step Down

Step down only with expert selection and preferably under one carat in a brilliant cut.

Every stone we recommend is scored by ROSI™, our gemological intelligence, built by our gemologists, with clarity verified by a human eye against the actual stone. Request a ROSI™ Score Report on any diamond, ours or anyone else’s.

Shape Guidance

Where SI1 Belongs

SI1 belongs in brilliant cuts, where the hall-of-mirrors faceting actively conceals inclusions: rounds, ovals, cushions, and radiants hide SI1 characteristics best. We do not recommend SI1 for emerald or asscher cuts, whose open facets display precisely what this grade needs hidden, and above two carats every SI1 needs individual review regardless of shape.

Shape by shape guidance, including face-up size tables and what to demand on each certificate, lives in our shape guides.

An Honest Word
A verified eye clean SI1 is the best value in diamonds. The word doing the work in that sentence is verified.

The SI1 category contains both the smartest buys on the market and stones we would never set. The certificate cannot tell you which is which; the plotting diagram and the video can. That verification is the entire game at this grade, and it is precisely the work our gemologists do before an SI1 ever reaches a recommendation. Bring us any SI1 you are considering, ours or anyone else's, and we will tell you honestly which kind you have found.

Questions

SI1 Clarity Questions, Answered

Is an SI1 diamond eye clean?
Often, but never assume it. SI1 inclusions are noticeable under magnification; whether they show to the naked eye depends entirely on their type, color, and location in the specific stone. Many SI1 diamonds are fully eye clean, and many are not. The stone must be reviewed on high resolution video or in person, every time.
Is SI1 good enough for an engagement ring?
A verified eye clean SI1 in a brilliant cut is one of the smartest engagement ring purchases possible: it looks identical to VS grades and frees real budget for size, color, or cut. An unverified SI1 bought on the grade alone is a gamble we would not take with your ring.
SI1 vs VS2: which is the better buy?
A verified eye clean SI1 beats VS2 on pure value, because you pay SI prices for a VS look. VS2 beats SI1 on certainty, because it needs no verification. With a gemologist checking the stone, choose the SI1 and spend the difference where it shows. Without one, the VS2 is the safer instrument.
Can I use an SI1 diamond in an emerald cut?
We advise against it. Step cuts display the interior of the stone through long open facets, exactly the environment where SI1 inclusions surface. For emerald and asscher cuts, VS2 is our floor and VS1 our recommendation. Keep SI1 for the brilliant cuts that know how to keep its secret.
