Cut is the most important of the 4Cs, and proportions are where cut lives: the angles and ratios that decide whether light returns to your eye or leaks out the back of the stone. The ranges below matter. What matters more is understanding why no chart, ours included, can promise a beautiful diamond by itself.
Proportions are the geometry of a cut diamond: the size of the table, the depth of the pavilion, the height of the crown, and the angles connecting them, each expressed relative to the stone's diameter at the girdle. Together they form the optical machine that decides what happens to every ray of light that enters.
Light that enters a diamond reflects off the interior of its facets and returns to the eye in one of two forms. It leaves as white light, which the trade calls brightness, or it divides into the spectral colors, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, which the trade calls fire. As the stone or the viewer moves, the alternating flashes of white and colored light against a moving pattern of dark contrast produce scintillation, the property everyone else calls sparkle.
The proportions govern all three. Change one angle and the path of every reflection changes with it, which is why cut quality, not color and not clarity, is what makes one diamond read as alive and another as glassy from across a room.
Picture a hall of mirrors where you appear in every panel because each mirror hands the light to the next in perfect succession. Tilt one mirror slightly and the chain breaks, unless every other mirror moves in response. A diamond's facets work exactly this way.
This is the single most important fact about proportions: no parameter means anything alone. A pavilion angle that performs beautifully under one crown angle leaks light under another; a table size that suits one depth deadens a different one. A small change in any value demands compensating changes in the others, which is why two diamonds with nearly identical certificates can look meaningfully different, and why the chart below is where analysis starts rather than ends.
For the round brilliant, the shape with by far the most studied geometry in diamonds, these are the ranges within which excellent light performance lives.

Read the table as a screen, not a verdict. A stone outside these ranges has almost certainly traded light for weight, and can be set aside with confidence. A stone inside them has earned a closer look, because not every combination drawn from these ranges works: the values must suit each other, mirror to mirror, and only the finished stone proves they do. Well cut diamonds also carry a minimum of Very Good for both symmetry and polish, the craftsmanship grades that sit beside the proportions on every certificate.
The question of a single perfect recipe has been tested more thoroughly than almost anything in gemology. Before introducing its cut grading system in 2005, GIA spent decades on the problem, analyzing more than 70,000 observations of 2,300 diamonds in studies spanning the entire trade, manufacturers, dealers, retailers, and the customers who ultimately wear the stones.
The conclusion reshaped the industry: there is no single set of proportions that defines a well cut round brilliant. Many different combinations produce diamonds that are bright, fiery, and sparkling with a pleasing pattern of light and dark face up. Each of the five cut grades therefore represents a range of proportion sets and appearances, not one formula.

Within the excellent range there remains a genuine choice, because brilliance and fire pull against each other. Steeper crown angles and smaller tables bend more light into spectral color, producing fire; shallower crowns and larger tables return more white light, producing brilliance. Antique cuts lean hard toward fire, which is much of their charm; most modern cutting aims for the balance point between the two.
Neither preference is wrong, and no certificate records which one a stone favors. This is one more reason the final judge of cut is your own eye, on the actual stone, in the lighting where it will live. A showroom spotlight flatters every diamond; your desk lamp, your kitchen, and an overcast afternoon do not, and a stone reviewed at home across all of them has passed a harder and more honest exam. It is one of the quiet advantages of buying with 40 day returns behind you.
Three blind spots survive even an Excellent grade, and they are where our evaluation earns its keep.
GIA grades proportions only on round brilliants. Ovals, cushions, emerald cuts, and every other fancy shape receive polish and symmetry grades but no light performance verdict at all, which is why fancy shapes are judged on video, stone by stone, or not really judged at all.
A grade certifies that the proportions fall within a performing range, not that this stone's particular combination sings. Two Excellent stones can differ visibly in life and pattern, and the difference lives only in the stone itself.
Outside GIA and IGI there is no common standard behind cut terminology, and the same impressive words describe different stones at different sellers. We treat every such term as a claim to verify against the proportions and the video, never as a grade.

Then insist on the evidence no chart contains, an Excellent or Very Good grade on rounds, Very Good minimum on symmetry and polish everywhere, and video of the actual stone for anything without a cut grade, which is every fancy shape ever cut.
