SI2 is expert territory. Its inclusions are easy to find under magnification and sometimes visible without it. The right SI2 is a genuine bargain; the wrong one is why the grade has a reputation. Knowing the difference is not optional here.
An SI2 diamond carries inclusions a grader finds easily at 10x magnification, and the category sits on the border where characteristics begin crossing into naked-eye visibility. Some SI2 stones are eye clean, typically when their inclusions are white, transparent, or pushed to the edges. Many are not. The spread inside this single grade is wider than anywhere else on the scale.
That spread is both the danger and the opportunity. SI2 pricing assumes visible flaws, so the minority of stones that hide theirs are priced below their appearance. Capturing that gap takes patience, a strict eye, and usually a smaller stone: under one carat in a brilliant cut, an eye clean SI2 can be a quietly excellent buy.
Where SI2 sits on the GIA clarity scale. The full scale, grade by grade, lives in our complete clarity guide.
Every clarity decision is really a comparison with the grades on either side. Here is that comparison, made honestly.
Step up for better odds and a wider selection of eye clean candidates. Most buyers should.
Choose SI2 only with expert selection, in a brilliant cut, and ideally under one carat, where its economics genuinely shine.
We do not go below SI2 for center stones. Visible inclusions cost beauty and can cost durability, and no saving repays that.
Every stone we recommend is scored by ROSI™, our gemological intelligence, built by our gemologists, with clarity verified by a human eye against the actual stone. Request a ROSI™ Score Report on any diamond, ours or anyone else’s.
SI2 has one natural habitat: smaller brilliant cuts, where dense faceting and modest table size give inclusions the least room to show. It has no business in a step cut at any size, and above one carat the eye clean minority thins out fast. Every SI2 we recommend has been reviewed stone by stone, without exception.
Shape by shape guidance, including face-up size tables and what to demand on each certificate, lives in our shape guides.
The right SI2 is a bargain. The wrong one is the reason your friends warned you about SI2.
No grade divides more sharply between its best and worst stones. We will not pretend the odds are even: most SI2 diamonds show something, and the eye clean minority takes real searching to find. But that minority exists, it is priced as if it did not, and in a smaller brilliant cut it delivers more diamond per dollar than anything else on the scale. If you want us to hunt one for you, we will, and we will show you exactly why the one we bring back made the cut.
