What Is a VS2 Diamond Clarity Grade?

Clarity Grade Guide

The VS2 Clarity Grade

VS2 is the most popular clarity grade in the world, and the market is right. Almost always eye clean, meaningfully more accessible than everything above it, and abundant enough to be choosy about the things that actually show: cut, color, and size.

Very Slightly Included 2

What VS2 Actually Means

A VS2 diamond carries minor inclusions that a skilled grader finds with only modest effort at 10x magnification, typically small crystals, feathers, or clouds sitting outside the stone's center. The vast majority of VS2 diamonds are eye clean, and in brilliant cuts under two carats the exceptions are rare enough to be notable.

VS2 is where beauty and budget genuinely meet, which is why it outsells every other grade. It captures nearly all of the practical benefit of the grades above it while leaving budget on the table for the factors your eye actually ranks first: the quality of the cut, the whiteness of the color, the presence of the stone on the hand.

The Neighbor Argument

Step Up, Stay, or Step Down

Every clarity decision is really a comparison with the grades on either side. Here is that comparison, made honestly.

Above: VS1

When to Step Up

Step up for step cuts, for stones above two carats, or to skip video review entirely.

This Grade: VS2

When to Stay

Choose VS2 as the default for brilliant cuts. It is the market's favorite grade because it deserves to be: eye clean in practice, sensible in price, abundant in supply.

Below: SI1

When to Step Down

Step down with a gemologist involved. A verified eye clean SI1 is the only thing on the scale that beats a VS2 on value.

Every stone we recommend is scored by ROSI™, our gemological intelligence, built by our gemologists, with clarity verified by a human eye against the actual stone. Request a ROSI™ Score Report on any diamond, ours or anyone else’s.

Shape Guidance

Where VS2 Belongs

VS2 is at home in every brilliant cut: round, oval, cushion, radiant, pear, marquise, princess. In step cuts and in stones above two carats, we recommend reviewing the specific stone on video, since larger tables and open facets give inclusions more room to appear.

Shape by shape guidance, including face-up size tables and what to demand on each certificate, lives in our shape guides.

An Honest Word
The most popular grade on the scale is popular for the right reasons.

It is rare that the market's default is also the expert's recommendation, but VS2 is that case. Nearly every VS2 brilliant cut is eye clean, the price steps down meaningfully from VS1, and supply is deep enough to hold out for an excellent cut. The two places we pump the brakes: step cuts, where VS2 needs individual review, and very large stones, where inclusions scale with the diamond. Everywhere else, the crowd has it right.

Questions

VS2 Clarity Questions, Answered

Is a VS2 diamond eye clean?
Almost always, and in brilliant cuts under two carats, reliably so. VS2 inclusions require magnification to find in the vast majority of stones. The exceptions concentrate in step cuts and larger sizes, which is where we review the specific stone before recommending it.
Why is VS2 the most popular clarity grade?
Because it sits precisely where the value curve bends. Above VS2, additional money buys assurance the eye cannot see; below it, savings come with verification homework. VS2 delivers an eye clean look at the friendliest reliable price, which is why more engagement ring diamonds carry this grade than any other.
Is VS2 good enough for a 2 carat diamond?
Usually, with a look first. Inclusions become easier to see as carat weight grows, so at two carats and above we review the stone's video and plotting diagram before confirming it is eye clean. Most pass. The point is knowing yours does.
Should I buy VS2 or spend more on color?
If your VS2 candidate is eye clean, spend the difference on color or cut, in that order of visibility. A G color VS2 with an excellent cut will outshine a D color SI2 and embarrass an H color VVS1 of average make. Clarity past eye clean is the least visible place money can sit.
