Marquise Cut Engagement Rings

Two points and a full curve make the marquise regal and elongating on the hand. Our marquise cut engagement rings are made to order in our Los Angeles atelier, set with a natural or lab grown marquise diamond that is GIA or IGI certified.

One fair price, complimentary insured U.S. shipping, and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

The Marquise Cut

Marquise Engagement Rings

A marquise diamond is an elongated brilliant with a point at each end, the shape with the largest face up size per carat of any diamond cut. A 1 carat marquise is about 10 millimeters long, against 6.5 for a round, and it makes the finger look longer and slimmer than any other shape. It is a vintage cut that has come back as a modern one, and every marquise engagement ring here is made to order in our Los Angeles atelier with both points held by prongs.

The marquise is the most demanding shape to cut well. Both points must sit on the same center line, the two halves must mirror each other, and the bow tie across the middle must be faint. When all three are right it is the most elegant diamond on a hand. When one is wrong it shows, and the certificate will not tell you.

One fair price

Each setting and each diamond carries a single price. No codes, no strikethroughs, no timing the purchase.

GIA or IGI certified

Natural diamonds graded by GIA. Lab diamonds graded by IGI. Our gemologist verifies every diamond against its certificate before it is set.

Resizing and warranty

Two ways to own one

Build your ring. Choose a setting below, then pair it with a natural or lab diamond from our inventory. A ROSI™ Score Report, our gemological intelligence, reads the cut performance and fair market position of any natural diamond you are considering, and John Anderson, our Lead Gemologist, reviews the shortlist with you.

Choose a Select ring. The Select rings arrive complete, with an IGI certified lab diamond already matched to the setting in the carat weight you choose.

A marquise needs a setting that respects its points and its length. Two prongs at the points, or a bezel, or the marquise will chip. And a wide band fights the shape; a slim band or an east west set lets it be a marquise.

How to choose a marquise diamond

  • Ratio. 1.75 to 2.15 is the classic marquise. 1.85 to 2.00 is the most requested. Lower reads fuller; higher reads needle thin.
  • Symmetry. Both points on the center line and the two halves mirrored. The certificate does not grade this; our gemologist checks every marquise.
  • Bow tie. Marquises carry the strongest bow tie of any shape. Faint and moving is normal; dark and fixed is a cut flaw. The ROSI™ report flags it.
  • Color. Color concentrates at the points. H or better in white metal; yellow gold forgives down to J and is the classic vintage pairing for a marquise.
  • Setting. Prongs on both points, always. Six prongs with two at the points and four at the sides is the standard. East west, with the marquise set sideways on the band, is the modern alternative.

Talk to a jeweler before you decide

The marquise is the shape where the gap between a good diamond and a bad one is widest and least visible on paper. John Anderson, our Lead Gemologist, walks you through it on the phone or by video. Call 1-800-779-1726 or request a consultation. There is no charge and no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a marquise diamond look bigger?

Yes. A marquise has the largest face up size per carat of any shape. A 1 carat marquise is about 10 by 5 millimeters, which covers more of the finger than a 1.5 carat round.

Is a marquise diamond fragile?

The two points can chip if exposed. Prongs on both points, or a bezel, protect them completely. Every marquise setting in this collection does one or the other.

What is an east west marquise?

A marquise set sideways across the finger instead of along it. It reads modern, sits lower, and takes a straight wedding band. It is the most requested marquise setting of the last few years.

What ratio should a marquise be?

1.75 to 2.15. The classic sits around 1.85 to 2.00. Below 1.75 reads full and oval like; above 2.15 reads very narrow.

Natural or lab diamond?

Either. Both are certified, natural by GIA and lab by IGI, and the setting is modeled to the diamond in both cases. Lab diamonds give you more carat for the same spend; natural diamonds are rarer and hold their place in the market differently. The setting, the production and the warranty are identical.

How long does the ring take to make?

8 to 12 business days from the day the diamond is confirmed. The CAD model is built around the measurements on the certificate, the diamond is verified against the certificate by our gemologist, and the ring is finished and inspected in Los Angeles before it ships insured.
