Round brilliants are the only shape with a standardized GIA cut grade. Look for Excellent or Very Good cut grade; cut affects brilliance more than color or clarity at typical viewing distance.
The halo of melee surrounding the center stone adds approximately 0.3 to 0.5 carats of visual size, plus dramatically more sparkle. A halo also protects the center stone and allows a smaller center to look significantly larger.
Yes. Hidden halos sit under the gallery of the ring, visible only from the side profile, they add intimate sparkle without changing the face-up look. Visible halos add overt glamour; hidden halos add understated luxury.
The most popular sizes are 1 carat, 1.5 carat, and 2 carat. Round diamonds face up slightly smaller than ovals or cushions of the same weight because of their deeper proportions.
