E is colorless with the volume turned all the way up, one notch below the letter everyone knows. Only a grader with master stones can separate it from D. Your eye never will, and neither will anyone else's.
An E color diamond shows no body color face up and only the faintest trace face down, detectable exclusively by trained graders comparing against master sets. It sits inside the colorless band of the scale, D through F, where the distinctions are laboratory facts rather than visible qualities. In any setting, in any light your life will actually contain, an E is perfect white.
E exists for buyers who want the colorless certificate without paying the toll the letter D charges for its fame. The saving over D is real and the visible cost is zero, which makes E one of the quietest smart decisions on the scale: nobody chooses it for bragging rights, and that is exactly why it is priced sensibly.

Step up for the top letter on the certificate. The stone itself will not change.
Choose E for guaranteed colorless paper at a friendlier position than D, especially in platinum settings and step cuts where a colorless grade is doing visible work.
Step down freely inside the colorless band. F carries the same word on the certificate and the same white on the hand.

E flatters platinum and white gold, where its coolness reads as pure light. Like all colorless grades it survives every shape, including the step cuts and large elongated fancies that punish warmer stones. In yellow gold its advantage over near colorless grades disappears into the metal's own warmth, which is worth knowing before paying for it.

The difference between E and D is a grader's call between two stones that both read as pure ice, made face down under laboratory light with master stones for reference. On a hand there is no difference to find, and the market still prices the two letters apart. If the colorless band is where you want to live, E is its best address, and we will say so even when the D beside it carries the better margin.
