Oval diamonds are one of the fastest-growing shapes for engagement rings, featuring elongated brilliant facet pattern that lengthens the finger. Oval cut quality is not graded on GIA reports. Look for a length-to-width ratio of 1.35:1 to 1.50:1 for the classic oval silhouette, and watch for the 'bowtie effect', a dark area across the center. A well-cut oval has minimal bowtie.
Ovals look stunning in east-west orientation (laid horizontally), in hidden-halo solitaires, and in three-stone settings with trillion or pear side stones.
The most popular sizes are 1.5 carat, 2 carat, and 3 carat. Ovals face up 5 to 10% larger than rounds of the same carat weight, you get more visual size per dollar.
